ApacheCon2008 - Last Day in New Orleans

Today is the final day of ApacheCon 2008 for the folks who aren't staying for the "voluntourism" day Saturday. I think the idea of "voluntourism" is a great idea, and hopefully the idea will take off.

Yesterday I took the stairs down from the 40th floor to the first floor just for fun. Down is easier than up, but today my legs ache after siting around in sessions all day. I am sure I'll get a chance to work out the kinks walking around airports on the way home to Omaha.

The rain gave way to a not so steamy, but relatively dry afternoon. I did get a chance to snap some photos of the French Quarter (or maybe it was the Garden District? I never looked at a tourist map) over lunch. I will get those posted later.

I am still amazed at how narrow the streets are. Despite the high volume of traffic, including automobile, bicycle, and pedestrian, things seem to move along pretty well. I've never been to Europe, but I imagine this might be how the old, crowded European cities might look.

I learned some cool new things at ApacheCon, and had the opportunity to participate in a Birds of a Feather session on "Web Operations Battle Scars." I've got some ideas of things I want to try in the R&D environment, and if things work out, they may eventually work its way into production.

Proprietary Software Funeral March - ApacheCon2008

Brainfood.com, Hotwax Media and 10gen sponsored a mock funeral for proprietary software at ApacheCon 2008 in New Orleans, Louisiana. The funeral was done in full New Orleans style with a jazz band parade through the streets with a police escort. Surprised spectators were overheard asking, "Who's in the box?"

The destination was a music bar, but I turned back to attend the "Web Operations Battle Scars" Birds of a Feather session, so I didn't get to see how this little party died down... ahem.

If I were the type to catalog a list of things I want to do before I die, marching in the streets of New Orleans in celebration of a funeral might be in there. Even though this wasn't a real funeral, it was still a blast.

Lots of bikes in the Big Easy

In addition to liquor, gifts, and voodoo supplies, you see a lot of bikes on the streets of New Orleans. Check out these photos of the local two wheeled commuters.

The stand-up version of this game isn't nearly as fun as the sit-down.

Awesome! Asteroids with nearly 40,000 credits on it.

Canal St. has an emergency lane/streetcar lane running down the middle.

How to pay for parking in New Orleans. I think you put in money or a credit
card and get some kind of parking debit card for the meters.

Streetcars are used here, at least in this district.

I think that's Lake Pontchartrain in the distance.

Arrival in New Orleans

The trip here to New Orleans was uneventful. The weather was great both on the ground and in the sky.

I've been using the camera phone to post a few pictures. I'll try to get some nice picture out of my 40th floor hotel window tomorrow.

At a food court in Houston, I was approached by a young man with an accent asking a question. He spoke English well, but pointed to my soda straw asking what the word for it was. Later, as I was leaving my table, I asked him what the word for it was in his language. I think he thought I was kidding, or teasing, but I wasn't. I am genuinely interested in languages. He replied that he was Syrian and that the Arabic word is (and I have no idea of the spelling, or if I even heard it correctly): kusla

ApacheCon promises to be filled with lots of learning and networking opportunities. One cool new feature is a dedicated social networking style web site to help people connect with each other and with the sessions, speakers, etc.. If you're a part of ApacheCon, check it out at http://apacheconus2008.crowdvine.com/

Excessive baggage? give me a break.

Since when is a single bag "excessive?" I didn't even get any peanuts on the flights!

ApacheCon 2008 - Intro

Destination: New Orleans, Louisana, USA

Event: ApacheCon 2008

Goal: Learn more about Apache open source projects, with a particular emphasis on the HTTPD web server. I hope to gain more knowledge about how Apache HTTPD can better be used for high-volume, high-availability web sites. I also hope to learn more about simplifying configuration management, web search, logging strategies, and whatever else comes along. It would also be nice to network with other Apache HTTPD server admins and swap notes and war stories.

I also hope to have a little fun and get some rest with a full 8 hours of sleep each night in a big, soft, comfy bed with no distractions. I might even bring a book to read.

Updates: I will be experimenting with using this blog combined with photo blogging via Zannel.com and Shozu.com, and quick updates using Twitter.com. Feel free to interact with me via comments on the blog and replies to the twitter updates.

Welcome: About this Blog

This is my travel blog. You won't find anything profound or travelogue-worthy here. I will simply use this blog to communicate my occasional travels with my friends and family.

You can expect to see a mix of photographs, low quality video, twitter updates, and regular blog posts. Often I just like to snap an interesting photo and put it up for sharing. Feel free to comment on the posts or to send twitters back at me.

Each photo will come in as a separate blog post, and will also be placed into the slideshow rotation at the top of the page.

Wish me luck!
